Exhaust

The component of the exhaust system capable of lessening the noise created by the engine is called the muffler. Mufflers and other pieces of the exhaust system are usually replaced simultaneously due to the collective wear amongst the components and because each section of the system is welded to the next.

Muffler maintenance

If you notice an unusual rumble or the smell of exhaust escaping from an unusual place under the car, chances are there is an exhaust leak. If not taken care of, you may be exposing yourself to carbon monoxide, which is an odorless and potentially dangerous gas when inhaled. Even if you have the slightest suspicion that there may be a problem with your exhaust, have it inspected by a professional as soon as possible. Even if you do not detect a problem, you should still have your vehicle’s exhaust system checked occasionally for safety reasons.

Exhaust gases are directed from the engine cylinder to the exhaust system through the exhaust manifold. Numerous exhaust pipes then carry the gases leaving the engine to the catalytic converter, followed by the muffler, and they exit out of the tail pipe. Exhaust pipes and other pieces of the exhaust system are usually replaced simultaneously due to the collective wear amongst the components and because each section of the system is welded to the next.

Exhaust manifold and pipes maintenance

You should inspect your vehicle’s exhaust manifold every so often to verify that all mounts are sturdy and stabilized and no cracks have appeared. In the interest of safety, bring your car to an expert service technician to have your exhaust pipes checked even when you don’t detect a problem.

The exhaust system controls:

  • Engine noise
  • Exhaust temperature
  • Vehicle emissions
The catalytic converter’s role is to turn the gaseous product of fuel combustion into less potent emissions that will not pose as great a threat to the environment. Nowadays, vehicles often contain multiple catalytic converters.

Catalytic converter maintenance

The life of the catalytic converter directly correlates with how well the vehicle is cared for. If your vehicle is not running smoothly, smoke is flowing from the tailpipe, or the “Check Engine” light flashes on the dashboard display, do not hesitate to get your car serviced in order to prevent any excessive damage to the catalytic converter.
