Earthquakes
Driving in natural disasters, including earthquakes, should be avoided at all costs. However, due to their unpredictable nature, it is possible that you could be stuck in a vehicle when an earthquake strikes. Being inside an automobile in motion during an earthquake is comparable to driving on four flat tires. Here are some tips for staying safe in your car during an earthquake:
- Slowly reduce your speed.
- Pull off the road when it is safe.
- Do not turn your car off while on or underneath bridges or overpasses.
- Refrain from travel until local authorities give permission.
- Do not park near fallen power lines or standing trees and buildings.
- When you turn off your car, keep your seatbelt buckled.
- Do not evacuate your vehicle until the tremors end.
- Remember earthquakes are always followed by aftershocks that are not as powerful but can still do some damage.
- Listen for warnings on the radio; most radio stations are equipped to broadcast emergency advisories.
- If you are caught on the highway during the earthquake, get off at the next available exit.
- Be wary of mudslides and falling rock because earthquakes are capable of triggering this.
- Store the following materials in your vehicle for emergency use:
- First aid kit
- Bottled water
- Blanket or sleeping bag
- Flashlight with spare batteries and extra bulb
- Fire extinguisher
- Pocket radio with spare batteries
- Regional maps
- Matches
- Prescription medicine
