Road Rage

We’ve all experienced it. You cut somebody off by accident, and you see them screaming obscenities in the rearview mirror. The next thing you know, they’re right on your tail, and their bumper is practically touching yours. Road rage is a common problem on our streets, but there are ways to deal with it without retaliating.

Common examples of road rage

 • Breezing through stop signs and red lights.

 • Speeding, tailgating, and darting from lane to lane.

 • Passing in the right lane.

 • Making indecent hand and facial gestures.

 • Yelling, blaring the horn, and flashing high beams.

The following tips provide you with a sane approach to aggressive driving:

 • Try your best to allow the aggressive driver to pass.

 • Do not attempt to duel with the aggressive driver by matching their speed or standing your ground in the passing lane.

 • Keep your seatbelt fastened in the event you are forced to make a hasty maneuver behind the wheel. It will also serve you well in an accident.

 • Do not stare at the other driver.

 • Do not acknowledge inappropriate gestures, and definitely do not respond to them.

 • Report road rage to local law enforcement by noting:

 • Vehicle description.

 • License plate number.

 • Location.

 • Direction vehicle is traveling.

 • If you have access to a cell phone and are able to dial 911 safely, contact the police.

 • If an aggressive driver gets in an accident up ahead, pull over a fair distance from the scene of the crash. Once the police get there, notify them of the absurd driving demonstration you witnessed earlier.
