After the Accident

The essentials.

Insurance Claims

Knowing what your auto insurance company covers guarantees a swifter, more efficient car accident claims process. It is unwise to delay a claim until after the crash because you may discover that your policy does not reimburse you for towing rental car costs. Usually, adding rental car coverage costs no more than two dollars per month, and you will be eligible to rent a vehicle for a small fee or free of charge while yours is being repaired.

The last area of concern, in terms of an accident, is who is liable to pay for the damage. If the damage to the vehicles involved is barely noticeable, the drivers may have to come up with a payment plan themselves minus the assistance of an insurance provider. However, this type of situation should be avoided if at all possible.

The other driver may verbally agree to compensate you for your vehicle’s repairs at the scene of the accident, but then change their mind once they receive the bill. By this point, too much time will have passed since the date of the crash, and the insurance company will have a hard time painting a clear picture with the evidence if you choose to file a late claim.

Also, be mindful that you will have no knowledge whether the other driver decides to file a claim with their insurance company. They could potentially report bodily injuries that hadn’t even been mentioned at the scene of the accident too. As a result, your insurance company could be coughing up a large settlement sum, or even worse, you could be sued. To avoid a fiasco such as this, always notify your insurance company regardless of how petty you view the accident to be, and don’t forget to review your policy. If the check that the insurance company mails to you is under a certain amount, the accident may not be deemed chargeable. In turn, you will not see that jump in your monthly premium which usually coincides with a claim.
